West Point Jig

Kind of Tune
jig
Place of Origin
Canadian Maritimes

The West Point Jig seems to have once been popular all across Prince Edward Island. Its infectious, march-like rhythms were ideal for accompanying certain figures of the quadrille. Observe that the melody tends to vary widely in terms of detail from fiddler to fiddler.

The tune may be named for the small Island community of West Point, situated on the southwestern coast of Prince County near the town of O'Leary.

Notation for the version played by Johnny Joe & Phonsey Chaisson is in Fiddle Music of Prince Edward Island.
