Mixed farming: what was on the farm

KP: Were you born on a farm?
HD: Yes.
KP: What kind of farm?
HD: Just mixed farming. It was mostly all mixed farming at that time on the Island.
KP: And what were the things that were on the farm?
HD: Well there was milk cows, cattle of all kinds, pigs, and horses, sheep, and hens, that's about it.
KP: Did they grow crops?
HD? Oh yes, mixed crops. There'd be potatoes, turnips, mangles, turnips, wheat and oats, and of course hay.
KP: What are mangles?
HD: They're something like a beet. They're used for cattle feed, mostly.
