Speakers:

TC – Timothy Chaisson

KP – Curator Ken Perlman

TC: I learned a lot from Peter, he actually mentored me quite a bit: using the fourth fingers for example. He doesn't usually play open strings for fiddle I guess; his technique was that he always used the fourth finger and blend them together. Like using the whole length of the bow, I got that from the Dad.

KP: Kevin

TC: From Kevin. And from Kenny, just learning different types of tunes. He was always the one who played the more difficult tunes, that were like in Bb and C and F. And I learned a lot from him that way. And he wrote a lot of tunes too. JJ has a really clean way playing which I really like that I take from him, too. Like he has a really clear way of pronouncing all of his notes, and he has a really neat style. Some my other cousins would probably – Just learning tunes and then using the whole bow while playing , and yeah like fourth fingers, and grace notes, things like that.

KP: Are there any other fiddlers you listen to outside of the family?

TC: Oh yeah, tons of fiddlers. Probably one of my biggest influences fiddle-wise would be Natalie MacMaster, [and] Buddy MacMaster.

KP: Was that in person or from recordings?

TC: From recordings mostly, like I've met them before but mostly from recordings, yeah.
