Mary Smith and Friends was one of the many amateur, fiddle-based ensembles that have sprung up around the Island in the wake of the Fiddling Revival (another is the Murray Harbour Six). They perform frequently at at old age homes and benefits. Although all band members (apart from Weigars) grew up in Island communities with strong musical traditions, neither the band repertoire nor its performance style are particularly traditional in focus. Most of their songs are country and western, and the fiddle tunes are drawn largely from what might be described as a mainstream North American canon.
The leader and guiding force behind the band is Mary Pineau Smith of North Rustico Harbour.
