AS: I would say at least half of the students I teach have fiddlers in their family background, somewhere. And it's often their grandparents or great grandparents. And the fiddling skipped their parents' generation. But the grandparents are very supportive of the children learning to play, and it's often been the grandparents that bought the instrument or helped pay for the lessons, or helped drive them, or take them to Community School to get them to start it, or whatever. I found that they've been very encouraging to the kids, and the kids love to go and play their tunes for them, of course. If the grandparents are found in the front row when the kid's playing at the ceilidh, it's a real boost for the kid.
