KP – Curator Ken Perlman

KP: A lot of fiddlers have commented about – That no two fiddlers play…

TS: The same.

KP: They might play the tunes the same way but they all have what they call their own "twists."

TS: That's right. You just put an extra note in it, or a little twirl on the end or a twirl on the start, a twirl on the start, a twirl on the second turn (laughs).

KP: Why do you do that?

TS: To just make it interestin' (laughs) I play – Well I learned it first, I played it like this.

Smith plays original version of Ste. Anne's Reel

TS: And now

Smith plays his current twist (version) of Ste. Anne's Reel

TS: Just a little different. And this guy said, "I never heard it like that." "Well I said, no, perhaps you didn't," because I said, that it makes it interesting if you play a little different.
