According to Archie Stewart and his frequent accompanist Chester MacSwain, MacSwain's father - who himself was not a musician - learned this tune while working in the lumber woods of Nova Scotia. He returned to PEI and whistled the tune to local fiddlers. Notation for the version that Stewart played is in The Fiddle Music of Prince Edward Island.
